You can be maxed out on typed promo codes and still have room to add more Kohl's Cash certificates.

There's a third limit hiding inside this: only one sitewide percent-off coupon is allowed per order. Up to 6 dollar-off coupons, including Kohl's Cash and Kohl's Rewards-issued certificates, can be applied in the same transaction. So the "stacks with everything" claim you see on most deal blogs is half true: Kohl's Cash stacks with clearance prices and with a percent-off coupon, but you only get one percent-off coupon, full stop.

A few things are excluded from every coupon type, including Kohl's Cash itself: gift cards, Sephora at Kohl's merchandise, Kohl's Cares and charitable items, price adjustments, payments toward a Kohl's Card or any third-party charge account, and taxes, shipping, and handling fees.

Can you use Kohl's Cash at Sephora inside Kohl's?

No. Sephora at Kohl's is the one hard exception in the whole program. Those purchases earn Kohl's Rewards points only, not Kohl's Cash, and Kohl's Cash cannot be redeemed on Sephora items at all. Sephora products also don't count toward your $50 earn threshold, so a $100 Sephora haul during an earn period earns you exactly nothing. Is there a minimum purchase to redeem Kohl's Cash?

No minimum is published anywhere in Kohl's own terms. The only cap is the maximum of 6 certificates per transaction. If you have a $10 Kohl's Cash certificate and a $3 item, you can use it, and you forfeit the difference. Kohl's doesn't issue change or credit for the unused portion, so it's almost always better to save a certificate for something closer to its face value.

What happens when Kohl's Cash expires?

The one thing that actually shrinks your Kohl's Cash

Remember the earn base: new Kohl's Cash is calculated on your total after all coupons are applied. Kohl's Cash certificates are coupons. So if you redeem old Kohl's Cash during an earn-period transaction, you're shrinking the very total that determines how much new Kohl's Cash the trip earns.

An example with round numbers. Say your cart totals $100 during an earn period. Applied cleanly, that earns $20 in new Kohl's Cash. But if you apply $40 in old Kohl's Cash certificates first, your post-coupon total drops to $60, and the trip now earns $10 in new Kohl's Cash instead of $20. You didn't lose money. You saved $40 and still earned $10. But the "$100 trip earns $20" math you might have had in your head never happens.

The practical move, and this is our analysis rather than anything Kohl's recommends: if you're planning a large earn-period purchase, consider splitting it into two transactions. Redeem your old certificates on a separate, smaller trip outside the earn period if possible, then make your big earn-period purchase with the total as intact as you can make it. Obviously this only matters on bigger trips. On a $60 cart, one old certificate either way rarely changes the outcome.
