The weekly markdown schedule
Target reduces different departments on different weekdays. The pattern is well established and holds at most stores, though individual locations do drift by a day depending on staffing. Shopping a department on its markdown day is the single most effective thing you can do at Target.

Price endings tell you how far along the markdown is
Target clearance prices end in an 8, and the ending indicates roughly where the item sits in the markdown cycle. Regular-price items end in 9, so an ending of 8 is itself the clearance signal.

Stacking discounts
- Target Circle offers apply on top of clearance prices, including the deepest markdowns.
- RedCard takes a further 5% off after everything else.
- Cartwheel-style offers and manufacturer coupons can generally be combined with clearance, which is unusual and worth exploiting.
- Seasonal clearance drops to 50% within days of the holiday, then 70% and 90% over the following two weeks.

It depends on the department. What does a Target price ending in 8 mean?
It means the item is on clearance. Regular prices end in 9. Within clearance, the ending tracks the depth of the discount — .98 is an early markdown of roughly 15%, while .08 is around 70% off and usually close to the end of the item’s life on the shelf.
Can I use Target Circle offers on clearance items?
Yes. Circle offers apply on top of clearance pricing, and RedCard’s 5% comes off after that. This stacking is one of the reasons Target clearance can beat the equivalent item elsewhere even when the sticker looks similar.
When does Target holiday clearance start?
Markdowns usually begin the day after the holiday, at around 50%. That typically moves to 70% within a week and 90% shortly after, though the 90% stage is picked over quickly and stock at that level is whatever nobody else wanted.
