How Amazon pricing actually works
Amazon does not run a traditional clearance cycle. Prices are set algorithmically and can change several times a day on the same item, which is why a "40% off" badge tells you very little on its own. What matters is where the current price sits against what the item has actually sold for over the past few months.
The list price Amazon strikes through is often a manufacturer's suggested price the item has never consistently sold at. A genuine deal is one that is below the recent average, not one with a large percentage next to it. Price history tools like CamelCamelCamel and Keepa are free and will show you that average in a few seconds.
The discount types worth knowing

When the big sales land
Prime Day runs in July and Prime Big Deal Days in October, both Prime-only. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are open to everyone and increasingly begin in early November rather than on the day itself.
Outside those windows, the deepest cuts tend to follow inventory rather than the calendar — end-of-generation electronics, seasonal stock going out of season, and anything the manufacturer has just replaced.

Are Amazon Warehouse items worth buying?
Usually yes, particularly for anything where cosmetic condition does not matter much. Items are graded from Like New down to Acceptable, most are customer returns rather than faulty stock, and they come with the same return window as new items. The main risk is missing accessories, so check the condition note before ordering.
Does Amazon price match?
No. Amazon dropped its price-match policy for competitors years ago and does not match its own earlier prices either. If the price falls shortly after you order, your only real option is to return and reorder within the return window.
How can I tell if an Amazon deal is genuine?
Compare the current price against the 90-day average rather than the struck-through list price. A free price tracker will show this instantly. If the current price is at or near the lowest point of the past three months, it is a real deal; if the list price is the only thing making it look cheap, it usually is not.
