Walmart Deals & Coupons
Walmart clearance is mostly invisible if you shop by shelf tag alone. Below the deals is how the markdown system works and how to find the prices the tags do not show.
Rollbacks are not clearance
A Rollback is a temporary price cut, typically running around 90 days, after which the item usually returns to its regular price. It is a promotion, not an attempt to clear stock. Clearance is separate, and it is where the deep discounts live.
The practical difference: a Rollback will very likely come back, so there is no urgency. A clearance item is being cleared out of that store and will not be restocked once it is gone.
Reading Walmart price endings
Walmart uses price endings as an internal signal, and while the system is not published and does vary between stores, the pattern below is consistent enough to be useful.
| Price ends in | Generally means |
|---|---|
| .00 | Full price. If it is on a clearance shelf, more markdowns are usually still to come. |
| .97 | Clearance. This is the most reliable clearance signal Walmart uses. |
| .93 | Often a further-reduced clearance price below the initial .97. |
| .88 / .01 | Reported at many stores as a final markdown. Rare, and it moves fast. |
| .50 | Frequently a manager-applied markdown rather than a system one. |
Widely reported across Walmart stores. Treat as a strong hint, not a guarantee.
The app is the actual tool
- Scan the barcode with the Walmart app in-store. The app shows that store’s current price, which is frequently lower than the shelf tag — unsold clearance often is not re-tagged.
- Check the endcaps and the back wall of each department. Clearance is consolidated there rather than left in its home aisle.
- Seasonal stock is cut hardest in the two weeks after the season ends.
- Store stock is specific to that store. An item cleared at one location may be full price at another a few miles away.
Walmart deals: common questions
What does a Walmart price ending in .97 mean?
A .97 ending is Walmart’s standard clearance marker. The item has been reduced to clear and will not be restocked at that store once it sells out. Prices ending in .93 or .01 generally indicate the item has been reduced again beyond the first clearance price.
Why is the shelf price higher than the app price?
Because clearance items are not always re-tagged after a markdown. The app pulls the live price for that specific store, so scanning the barcode is the only reliable way to see what an item will actually ring up at. If the two disagree, the register uses the system price.
Does Walmart price match?
Walmart matches Walmart.com prices at the register in most stores, but it no longer matches other retailers. Policies do vary by location, so it is worth asking at the service desk rather than assuming.
