A Dollar General penny list is a rundown of items the store's own system has flagged at $0.01 so staff will pull them from the shelf. Dollar General publishes no list, so this one is compiled from reports by our community of 500,000 members. New penny prices usually show up Tuesday morning, and this page updates automatically as finds come in.

How this list is built and what "confirmed" means

Dollar General has never published anything about penny items. No policy page, no newsroom post, no spokesperson quote. That means every list you'll find anywhere, including this one, is assembled from leaks and from people watching specific UPCs in the DG app until they flip to $0.01. Employees on r/DollarGeneral describe it plainly: headquarters has the full list, parts of it leak, and other people build lists by watching items they suspect are near the end of clearance.

Each item on this page carries a status. "Confirmed" means more than one independent report has the same UPC scanning at a penny. "Reported" means a single report so far. "Surprise" means an item pennied without appearing on any scheduled list, which happens more often than most guides admit. Employees report that health and beauty items in particular sometimes penny with no advance notice, and that the distribution center occasionally ships stock that's already pennied in the system.

Verify everything. The price scanner in the DG app set to your store is the standard check, and the register is the final word. Our full explainer on how Dollar General penny shopping works covers the mechanics in more depth.

When do new penny items show up at Dollar General?

Overnight Monday into Tuesday is the pattern. New markdowns and penny prices activate in the store system overnight Monday and usually show Tuesday morning. Shoppers consistently report that some stores update later on Tuesday, and some not until Wednesday. Employees have never explained why Tuesday is the day, because nobody outside Dollar General's systems actually knows. It's a pattern, not a rule.

Two exceptions worth knowing. Some lists carry a Monday effective date, meaning prices may be live Monday in some stores. And stores mid-remodel reportedly run their markdown wave on a Sunday rhythm instead.

One correction to something you'll see repeated in haul videos: stores do not reliably get the penny list in advance. Employees describe the store-side pop-up as partial or nearly empty, and one put it bluntly in August 2026: the list is often on Reddit before it ever reaches the store. What publishes on Thursday and Friday is the list sites' work, not a corporate document stores receive.

Where to find penny items in the store

There's no penny aisle. Penny items sit wherever they sat before being flagged, which is why they get missed. Shoppers and employees consistently point to the same high-yield spots:

One hard limit: employees say customers climbing or reaching the top "sky" shelves get asked to leave. Ask for help with those instead, though don't ask what's up there.

The big hauls come from remodels. When a store is remodeled, a whole planogram of discontinued product pennies at once, and that's where the viral cart videos come from. Dollar General planned roughly 4,250 remodels for 2026, so the odds of one near you are decent.

How to check a price before you buy

The DG app's price scanner, set to your specific store, is the tool shoppers rely on.

StageTypical discountWhat it signals
Food and candy first step25% offEarly clearance for food and candy; general merchandise often skips this stage
Stage 150% offStill a normal clearance buy
Stage 270% offWorth buying if you want it at all; one employee report says seasonal at 70% reaches penny in two to four weeks
Stage 390% offThe penny pipeline; one tracker says 90% stock is often a week or two from a penny
Penny$0.01A pull-from-shelf flag, not a sale; the window is already closing

Two warnings on the app itself. First, $0.01 is the strongest signal. A $0.00 reading is contested: some shoppers treat it as a penny tell, others report $0.00 means nothing at all, out of stock or unpriced. Don't drive to a store on a $0.00. Second, and this is the one almost nobody mentions: scanning from the app's saved List feature can produce false $0.01 or $0.00 readings. Scan the physical barcode or type the UPC manually.

Also, don't waste time looking for price-ending codes. Dollar General has no code system. Retailers like Target use tag digits, and some sites imply DG does too. It doesn't. No source, including the most detailed DG clearance guides, claims one exists.

The register is the final authority, always.

What to do at checkout

Keep it simple. Scan with the app first so you know what should ring. If an item rings at $0.01, pay and go. If it doesn't, say "I changed my mind," offer to put it back, and move on.

A few things experienced penny shoppers consistently recommend:

If the trip's a bust, check our Dollar General deals page for what's actually on sale this week.

Why an item stops being a penny (resets and pulls)

Penny items disappear two ways. The obvious one: staff find and pull them. Pulled stock gets boxed up to return to the warehouse or be destroyed, and employees say food is simply thrown out. Sources disagree on exactly where the boxed items end up, so we won't pretend to know.

The less obvious one is a price reset. If new stock of the same UPC arrives while old pennied stock is still on the floor, the system reverts the price to full. This is why a penny find can turn into a full-price surprise a week later, and why the exact UPC matters so much. The same product in a different size or count is a different item entirely.

There are also section resets, where an entire category gets discontinued at once and a block of UPCs pennies together. These hit select stores on a rolling schedule, not all stores. Dated examples from the past two years: a frozen reset starting May 13, 2024, a freezer reset on April 6, 2026, and a deli reset effective August 31, 2026. When a section reset lands near you, it's the closest thing to a predictable haul this hobby has.

Which items will penny next

Nobody can predict a specific penny, and anyone who claims to is guessing. But the signals are real. General merchandise usually steps through 50, 70, then 90 percent off before dropping to a penny, so anything sitting at 90% off is the best candidate on the floor. Food and candy often start earlier, at 25% off. How long each stage lasts isn't documented anywhere, and the honest answer is that it varies by store and by how fast staff clear things.

Then there are the surprise pennies that skip the ladder entirely. Employees report items pennying with no prior markdown, especially health and beauty, and mis-shipped stock that arrives already flagged.

If you want a head start on the regular markdown side, our holiday clearance schedule maps when each season's stock starts stepping down. And our full guide to how penny shopping works explains why all of this happens in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

What day is the Dollar General penny list updated?+

New penny prices activate in Dollar General's system overnight Monday, so most stores show them Tuesday morning. Some update later Tuesday or not until Wednesday, and some lists carry Monday effective dates. This page updates automatically as community reports come in, often starting the weekend before and continuing through Tuesday morning, so refresh rather than saving a screenshot.

Why do items ring up for a penny at Dollar General?+

A penny price is an internal flag telling staff to pull an item from the shelf because it's discontinued or at the end of clearance, not a promotion. Items usually step through 50, 70 and 90 percent off first, then drop to $0.01. Shoppers can buy them only because the system price changes before staff physically clear the shelf. Dollar General has never confirmed any of this publicly.

Can a store refuse to sell a penny item?+

Yes. No US law requires a store to complete a sale before payment, and a penny never appears on a shelf tag, so pricing accuracy rules don't create a right to buy. Every penny sale also counts as shrink against the store, and employees report being reprimanded for selling too many. If refused, put the item back and try another store rather than arguing.

Does the exact UPC matter?+

Yes, completely. A penny price attaches to one specific UPC, so the same product in a different size, scent or count will ring at its normal price. Always verify with the price scanner in the DG app set to your store, and scan the physical barcode or type the UPC manually. Scanning from the app's saved List feature can produce false penny readings.

Is penny shopping allowed?+

Buying an item that scans at $0.01 and paying a penny is a completed retail sale, and no law prohibits it. Stores can still decline before payment, and practice varies widely; employees themselves disagree about whether they're supposed to sell. Dollar General has never published a policy either way. A document circulating since at least 2019 says staff should sell, but the company has never confirmed it.
